The Grossarltal region has around 40 Alpine huts offering food and drink, the highest density of Alms in the whole of Salzburger Land. It is this large number of Alpine huts, most of which are open from mid June to mid September, that has given the Grossarl Valley its nickname “the Valley of Alms”. Enjoy stopping off at one of the many huts when enjoying a lovely walk along one of the Alm paths, suitable for the whole family, and enjoy being spoiled with home-baked bread, fresh butter and cheese from the Alm, cured ham, sausage, and home-made schnapps.
Some of the Grossarl lifts also run in summer. The bottom station of the Panorama lift is just 300 m from the Hotel Tauernhof.
Thanks to the gondola lift, you can be at 1840 m above sea level in just a few minutes, saving you the effort of walking up, or the inconvenience of driving up in the car.
From the top lift station, you have the choice of various hiking paths, ranging from simple strolls through to demanding hikes up to summits, accompanied of course by remarkable panoramic views of the mountains around Grossarl.
The specially designed pushchair route from the top station of the Panorama lift to the Spiegelsee is a highlight for families with babies or small children. Simply head off as a whole family from the family hotel Tauernhof, and in a few minutes you arrive at the Panorama gondola lift. Enjoy fantastic views up in the mountains, taking the pushchair with you.
Conquer the most beautiful peaks of the Hohe Tauern mountains on hikes and climbs in Salzburg.
For any mountaineers and hikers wanting to get up really high, there are plenty of summit and Alpine tours in the region, ranging from the grass-topped mountains that are easy to walk on with summits of around 2400 m through to demanding high mountain tours, mostly in the mountain around the village of Hüttschlag in the Hohe Tauern National Park. These are only suitable for very experienced mountaineers.
Climbing has grown to be something of a trend as far as sports go in recent years. This has led to the opening of 2 via ferrata (or Klettersteige) in the Grossarltal region.
The Gletschergoaß practice via ferrata gives the opportunity of gaining some initial climbing experience. The “mountains & health” team run a taster course in climbing there each week. As a “mountains & health” partner business, guests staying at the Vitalhotel Tauernhof can take part in these taster sessions free of charge.
The Klettersteig Kupfergeist is a via ferrata for experienced climbers only. The route takes you over the impressive Hüttschlag rockface at a height of about 275 m, covering about 140 vertical metres and has been designated a D-E difficulty level. To get to the start takes about 15 minutes, and to complete the Klettersteig you should allow about 2 hours.
