Let's go back to 1975 – in Großarltal, which at that time was still a languorous place, the foundation stone for a genuine, traditional hotel was laid. So much has changed since then, but so much hasn’t changed either. And we think that is great.

It was Ambros Hettegger senior, who, after a construction period spanning two years, opened the family-managed Hotel Tauernhof in 1977. With 3 stars, 29 rooms and the full backing of his family. At that time Großarl was still a really dreamy location, to make this a charming proposition. Yet that changed fast. Winter sport became increasingly popular in Austria, the ski areas were better connected and even in the summer, more and more guests streamed into the beautiful Salzburg mountains. The Tauernhof grew in popularity too. On-going upgrades and expansions made the hotel in Großarl and its offer even bigger and better. And today? Today, after a family history spanning over 40 years, the third generation, the Hetteggers are managing the new Hotel Tauernhof. Still with the same passion and commitment of previous eras. And so too will that remain.

A hotel with tradition

An original since 1977

Our history is more than just a past for us – it is what we are built upon. Today still, it defines our values and our daily actions. In short: We like to remember where we come from - after all, that too will define where we are going.

1977 – how everything started

After two years of construction, the Tauernhof opened its doors for the first time in December 1977. Ambros Hettegger senior and his wife Anni opened the 3-star establishment and its 29 rooms. Son Ambros Hettegger junior had just completed his training at the specialist hotel school in Bad Hofgastein and at the tender age of 17 entered into a management role.

1980s – Expansion everywhere

Großarl enjoys ever greater popularity in winter and summer alike. For the Tauernhof that meant, space became tight. Only an extension would help. To the south of the main building, 20 new rooms, a hotel dining hall and an indoor pool with whirlpool were created – at that time, a real highlight. With all its new features, the Tauernhof received its 4th star.

1990s – Out with the old and in with the new

The next big extension to the hotel came in 1993. This time the hotel was extended to the north. 14 new rooms and suites, and on the ground floor, the Reception and lobby with our ‘Kaminbar’. The existing rooms needed a first freshening up too. Lots of rooms, the dining hall, the sauna area, the guest snug area and the café enjoyed a new lease of life.

2000s – additional storeys and improvements

In the next decade the Tauernhof experienced another growth spurt. The north and south wings had storeys added, providing new rooms and suites. The indoor pool and the wellness area were also considerably extended. Panoramic windows were brought in, and guests could then enjoy a 600 m2 wellness area with 6 saunas and a separate cosmetics department. And the littlest ones out there were then able to run about in the two-storey play room inside, and on the adventure playground outside.

2010s – Quality in every respect

After over 30 years of the hotel being in business, it was time for something new, particularly in the rooms. Many were updated. Contemporary, Alpine flair moved in, bringing rainfall showers, W-LAN and more family-friendly room apportionment. A mammoth project, with the main water pipeline dating from 1977 requiring an upgrade. That might not sound spectacular, but all we can say is, it was great to get it over and done with.

2020 – Standstill and vertical take-off

There has never been a year like 2020 in the history of the Tauernhof. It began with a fantastic winter season – yet came to a sudden end in March with the start of the Corona pandemic. What followed was probably the strangest year in our times. One lock-down after another and the Tauernhof had to remain closed. Yet those who put this time to good use are astute. We did just that and made the hotel even better and nicer for our guests. In 2021, the improvements, including a new Reception, a new wellness area, the Schatzerei Restaurant and a re-design of the exterior areas, were completed – and we are absolutely ready for a new beginning.
