Thundering waterfalls, ice caves and the highest summit in Austria, and local highlights too that maybe not everyone knows about – there is so much to discover in the region in and around Großarl. Here are few of our excursion tips for the natural surroundings:

Großarl outdoor pool

The outdoor pool in Großarl is a mere stone’s throw from the Tauernhof, and is open daily from 09:00 to 19:30 when the weather is good.

A unique leisure centre and wonderful outdoor pool in the ‘Valley of Alpine pastures’, provide swimming fun for all the family: Area for non-swimmers, sports pool, wide slide, diving platforms, children's pool with slide, loungers, restaurant and lots more.

Panoramabahn Großarltal

Experience one of the loveliest viewing points in Großarltal, the ‘Valley of Alpine pastures’. 

The 6-seater cable car operated by Bergbahnen Großarltal very close to the Hotel Tauernhof takes you up to 1850 metres altitude in just a few minutes. From here, there are numerous options for hikes and also quite a few interesting mountain bike routes.

Großglockner High Alpine Road

More than 50 million visitors have already seen and experienced this impressive Alpine road. Whether it is by car, motorbike or bus – the journey up to the top is a rare natural spectacle. The journey proceeds through the different vegetation zones to the highest mountain in Austria, from crop fields up into the eternal ice.

NEW: Since 2017 the SalzburgerLand Card has enabled you to either enjoy a 24 hour Salzburg Card for the city of Salzburg, or a free journey on the Großglockner High Alpine Road!

Ferleiten wildlife park

Right on the Großglockner Road, on an area spanning some 15 hectares, there are more than 200 animals who live in this Alpine habitat. In the middle of the terrain is a large pond that has additional seating and relaxation areas, along with a viewing tower. Educational boards and display boards provide information about the flora and fauna in the Alps.

Kaprun dam power station

Hydro power enjoys a long and turbulent history in Austria. At ‘Staukraftwerk Kaprun’ you can experience a fascinating excursion into the mountains and to the shimmering, turquoise high mountain reservoirs. On a guided tour of the dam wall or in ‘Erlebniswelt Strom und Eis’ you learn more about how water power is harnessed and its benefits.

Werfen's World of Ice Giants

The biggest ice caves in the world are located in Salzburger Land. In the World of Ice Giants unique ice columns and ice sheets await. Kitted out with carbide lamps you make your way into the eternal ice. The sculptures in the ice palace will take your breath away.

Hohenwerfen Castle

Hohenwerfen Fortress sits enthroned on a 113 metre high rock cone. A visit is an exciting experience for all the family, especially with the falcon aerial show, the falconry museum, knights tournaments, knights meals, the gun room and the dungeon.

Krimml Waterfalls

Austria’s unique natural monument, awarded the European diploma! You ought to experience the highest waterfall in Europe, which has an overall height of 300 metres. It is the fifth highest waterfall on earth and in terms of height exceeds even the Victoria and Niagara Falls.

If you want to walk in the footsteps of Mozart for a day, have a lovely time seeing the animals at the zoo, or penetrate the depths of the earth in a mining cart, you don’t need a time machine, or an adventure game on your computer. All you need is a little bit of time. How exactly can you spend it? Here are a few suggestions for you.

Mozart city of Salzburg

A city filled with culture, sights and a unique joie de vivre. Even those of you who are experts on the Mozart city can always discover something new here. With Haus der Natur, Hellbrunn Zoo, Hohensalzburg Fortress, Mozart’s birth house and Mirabell Palace, to mention just a few of the sights in this wonderful city.

Hüttschlager valley head

Situated in the Hohe Tauern National Park, this area doesn’t just offer fantastic hiking routes, but also unique opportunities for fishing. Sports and leisure-oriented anglers and fly fishers are very well catered for here.

Hallein Salt Mine

To the south of the city of Salzburg, located above the picturesque town of Hallein on the Dürrnberg, is one of the oldest show mines in the world. Here on the Dürrnberg also lies the reason for the legendary wealth of historic Salzburg. Experience the exciting history of ‘white gold’ up close!

Spa town of Badgastein

The enchanting, lush and expansive Gasteinertal is also worth an excursion in itself. And indeed there is another true gem hiding in this myth-enshrouded valley - the spa town of Badgastein which is built into a rocky slope. Lovely paths tempt you to go hiking and Felsentherme Badgastein is a real holiday winner with families on those rainy summer and cold winter days.

Gut Aiderbichl

A very special place by animal lovers for animal lovers! A picturesque farm in Henndorf am Wallersee has become an ark for protecting animals. Gut Aiderbichl has become known far beyond the region itself. Little wonder, since the happy stories about its animals and suggestions with regard to more compassionate treatment of those who are weaker, fulfils a deep yearning within people.


With its crystal clear, emerald green water, Königssee in neighbouring Berchtesgadener Land exudes a unique, enchanting, fairy-tale atmosphere and tempts you to go swimming and enjoy lovely boat trips.
