„I’ve always loved spending time with our guests. I think that’s what makes us who we are as hosts. It’s something my parents always believed in too. We head out together, enjoy a drink in the evening, get to know one another – and, of course, there’s always time for a good laugh.“

As for his favourite spot in Grossarl ? That’s not an easy question to answer. After all, no one knows the region quite like Markus. Alongside Lake Schödersee and the Schuhflicker mountain, he especially recommends the Wetterkreuz, near the Viehhausalm mountain hut.
“There are several Wetterkreuze in Grossarl, but this one sits at around 1,900 metres and can be reached from the Viehhausalm in about half an hour. Why do I love it? The views across the valley are simply incredible. It’s only about 200 metres of elevation gain, but the trail is fairly steep. That said, there’s no need to worry – I was up there with some guests recently, and even their three-year-old made it to the top without any trouble. He absolutely loved it. It was a real adventure for all of us.”

Melanie (Reception): Hike to the Höllwand
Melanie has been part of the Tauernhof team for the past five years and, together with our reception team, is always there to help make your stay as enjoyable as possible. Her favourite place in Grossarl?
„I love the hike from the Aualm up to the Schuhflicker, then on to the Höllwand. Along the way, Lake Schuhflicker is the perfect spot to cool off with a swim. I’ve done this hike several times – most recently with one of our interns, including a dip in the lake. After reaching the summit of the Höllwand, there’s nothing better than stopping at the Aualm for a hearty alpine snack. I can highly recommend it.“
A guest favourite: Sunrise hike with Markus Hettegger
Who else loves hiking up the Schuhflicker? Our guests! Ask them about the experiences they’ll never forget from their stay at the Tauernhof, and one answer comes up again and again: the sunrise hike with Markus Hettegger. The day begins with an early start at around 4:30 a.m. From the Aualm, you hike together up to the viewpoint, where you’re rewarded with unforgettable views as the sun rises over the mountains. Markus leads this hike every week – even if just one guest signs up to join him.
„I’m actually a morning grouch myself – so I know what a sacrifice it can be to get up that early. But it’s absolutely worth it. The beautiful thing is that every day in the mountains feels different. The morning mist, the peace and quiet, the forest, and nature slowly waking up – it’s simply unique. Early in the morning, you can even hear the Mankei (marmots) calling. I often tell our guests: ‘Let’s just sit here quietly for two minutes and enjoy the rising sun.’ In the end, we all agree that taking a moment to simply be amazed and soak it all in was something everyone needed.“

We’re incredibly lucky to have such a dedicated kitchen team at the Tauernhof! Sonja is always ready to lend a hand and helps ensure our guests enjoy delicious moments at our Schatzarei. Even in her free time, food and enjoyment are never far away. So, what does she like to do on her days off?
„I really enjoy spending time at the Loosbühelalm with my family all year round. This is also where the cheese we serve at the Tauernhof comes from. I love the peaceful walk up to the hut and simply sitting there, soaking up the atmosphere. In winter, we’ve even made our way back down by toboggan. It’s great fun – not just for the kids.“

Julia is a true mountain enthusiast and always loves reaching new heights. Her personal favourite?
„I love the view to our valley from above. That’s why I especially enjoy hiking up to the Saukarkopf or the Gründegg – both tours reward you with a breathtaking 360-degree panorama.
Another one of my favourite hikes is the one to the Heukareck. It was actually where I saw my first marmot and chamois.“
